One of my favorite AIGA events in recent history was the AIGA Colorado “Hoppy Hour” at Anthem Branding in Boulder, CO. I went with another graphic designer, Blake, and we arrived early to grab appetizers and a beer across the street at the Hungry Toad. After priming up with some humus and Brainless Raspberries by Epic Brewing, we walked over to Anthem Branding where the view put my office view to shame. We were welcomed by the crew at Anthem and sent outside to enjoy some sunshine and cold beer. It was glorious. I opted for a Perzik Saison by Avery Brewing.
Blake and I walked around their studio and gawked with envy at all their design toys and displays. The set up was slick. I also really enjoyed seeing their Paper Fashion Show creation. I attended the Paper Fashion Show in 2014 and I hope I can go again in the future.
Besides drinking beer, we also learned a lot about Anthem Branding and their process. They work with a few different breweries on branding and packaging. I loved learning about their creative process and taking a peek at all their different packaging designs. And of course, there was the beer.
After a quick chat with the Anthem peeps and some networking with other AIGA members, it was time for our activity: Design Your Own Beer Label. For this assignment, we pulled the name of our beer out of one hat and the type of beer out of another. I pulled “No Brainer Amber Ale” and Blake pulled “Umbrella Bock.” I was lured in by the googly eyes but the glue available was awful. I ended up opting for a glittery gold glue stick which ended up everywhere, including my face. I also designed a second bottle, “Rocket Science Wheat Beer.” I chose to style a rocket ship with wheat coming out of the jet engines instead of fire, and regretfully my rocket looks a little “in the gutter.” Regardless, this event was an absolute blast and I hope there are more events like it in the future. It was a lot like AIGA Colorado’s Drink and Draw events, only the beer was provided for us.
